Picture
In our workshops we work toward a continued practice of expression.
We discover and utilize techniques of building up paint layers along with editing aspects within our layering.  This process of describing an image on a flat surface opens us up to flexibility and also helps us embrace any difficulty that comes up in painting. We discuss line quality, drawing, color relationships and composition/design. We look at how to recognize our voice in paint.
We often use additional mediums with our oil paints such as marker, colored pencil, pen, watercolor and acrylic, soft pastels along with brushes and palette knife.
We want a continued practice of unlearning what we have learned, breaking down processes and rebuilding or leaving unfinished and open.  This allows us to express in a way that  feels unique to each of us.
If there ever was a rule in paint- we find a way to break it.
In this way we have the opportunity to deepen our expression and the story of who we are unfolds.

Materials for Oils in Sketchbook

Sketchbooks
The key to a sketchbook that we can oil paint in is the weight of the paper.  Look for 145lb or 200gsm and up.  Cotton rag or cotton blend are both good options.
My favorite brand of sketchbook and paper line is Hahnemuhle.  Their watercolor line of sketchbooks is great for working in with oils.  You can find these on Amazon or Blick.  The paper is 100% cotton rag and very durable.
Moleskin watercolor sketchbook line is great.  The paper is ivory white and a cotton blend also found on amazon or Blick.
Strathmore watercolor sketchbook line is a perfect choice as well.
There are many brands and options out there to choose from that are quality sketchbooks.  I highly recommend 165lb or 200gsm or higher weight paper when making your selection.

Brushes and Tools
I personally love Blick Scholastic brushes.  They are inexpensive and durable.  Choose a variety of sizes and shapes, everyone has a different preference and we want ones that work for us.
A pallet knife is a perfect tool for mark making and deconstruction.  Choose one or a few that look interesting, this will ultimately be a personal preference as well.

Oil paints
I highly recommend quick dry white by Gamblin for use in our sketchbooks.  Winsor and Newton and Gamblin have a line of oils that are fast matte/quick dry.  Purchase a few colors to mix in with your other oils and it will help with dry time in your sketchbooks.  They have alkyd and linseed oils mixed in with them that help with dry time.

Clear Gesso is used either in our class or before coming to class to prepare surface.

Odorless Mineral Spirits for cleaning your brushes.

Disposable pallet paper large or travel pallet
Markers
Colored pencils
Reference photos on phone or iPad or laptop

Materials for WATERCOLOR in SKETCHBOOK

Sketchbooks

Any watercolor sketchbook will be great.  I personally like Hahnemuhle, but there are so many quality books out there.  For our workshops I like to work in a 8x6 or 8x10 size.  There is no need to prep the pages for watercolor paint.

Brushes and Tools
Watercolor brushes are great to use in all different sizes.  I like blick brand and to be honest one of my favorite watercolor brushes is an Artist Loft Firenze bright.  I believe in experimentation and the most expensive doesn't always mean the most effective.
Sandpaper in various grit is always a good idea in my workshops.
Palette knife is useful
Palette for paint, either disposable pad or travel palette is good
Paper towels
Cup to hold water
Painters tape or masking tape

Watercolor paints
Any brand and in any form works well. I use tube watercolors from Blick, Daniel Smith and Grumbacher. Dry watercolor palettes work too.  I also like the premixed with water Blick has to offer that come in a variety of colors.
If you have gouache you would like to bring to mess around with that will work great with watercolors too.
 Ivory Black
White
Sap green
Emerald green
Cad Red
Alizarin crimson
Cad yellow
Yellow ochre
Ultramarine
Any others that look fun and exciting to you.  I picked up an Opera Pink that has been super fun to experiment with.  Stay curious and interested when choosing supplies.

Be sure to bring reference pictures or paint from life with images we have in class or paint from the image I demonstrate with.  If you have your phone or ipad I can airdrop the image to you.
