Picture
In our classes we work toward a continued practice of expression.
We discover and utilize techniques of building up paint layers along with deconstructing aspects within our layering.  This process of describing an image on a flat surface opens us up to flexibility and also helps us embrace any difficulty that comes up in painting.  We often use additional mediums with our oil paints such as marker, colored pencil, pen, watercolor and acrylic along with brushes and palette knife.
We want a continued practice of unlearning what we have learned, breaking down processes and rebuilding or leaving unfinished .  This allows us to express in a way that sounds and feels unique to each of us.
If there ever was a rule in paint- we find a way to brake it.
In this way we have the opportunity to deepen our expression and the story of who we are unfolds.

Materials

Sketchbooks
They key to a sketchbook that we can oil paint in is the weight of the paper.  Look for 145lb or 200gsm and up.  Cotton rag or cotton blend are both good options.
My favorite brand of sketchbook and paper line is Hahnemuhle.  Their watercolor line of sketchbooks is great for working in with oils.  You can find these on Amazon or Blick.  The paper is 100% cotton rag and very durable.
Moleskin watercolor sketchbook line is great.  The paper is ivory white and a cotton blend also found on amazon or Blick.
Strathmore watercolor sketchbook line is a perfect choice as well.
There are many brands and options out there to choose from that are quality sketchbooks.  I highly recommend 165lb or 200gsm or higher weight paper when making your selection.

Brushes and Tools
I personally love Blick Scholastic brushes.  They are inexpensive and durable.  Choose a variety of sizes and shapes, everyone has a different preference and we want ones that work for us.
A pallet knife is a perfect tool for mark making and deconstruction.  Choose one or a few that look interesting, this will ultimately be a personal preference as well.

Oil paints
I highly recommend quick dry white by Gamblin for use in our sketchbooks.  Winsor and Newton and Gamblin have a line of oils that are fast matte/quick dry.  Purchase a few colors to mix in with your other oils and it will help with dry time in your sketchbooks.  They have alkyd and linseed oils mixed in with them that help with dry time.
